From Aspiration to Realization

TRIO Students and Study Abroad

The lack of diversity in Study Abroad has been a long talked about and lamented problem.  Even as Study Abroad participation by American students has more than doubled over the last decade, these steady increases hide disparity. Low - income and students of color remain significantly underrepresented among American students who travel abroad.

Multiple barriers for access to international opportunities include: program costs, language requirements, length of program (loss of work/income), insufficient information, lack of curiosity, limited travel experience, and individual and family fear. These factors often combine to discourage low-income students from programs attended by their more affluent peers.
